Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 29, Construction has officially started on Grow in Merwede (Block 8), a mixed-use urban development in the new Merwede district of Utrecht, the Netherlands. Utrecht Alderman Eelco Eerenberg formally marked the beginning of the project.

Completion of the entire city block is set for 2029.

Grow is a joint venture between developers AM (part of Royal BAM Group) and Synchroon. The city block covers approximately 75,000 m² of gross floor area and is designed as a car-light, people-focused neighbourhood where residents can live, work, exercise, and socialise within the same area.

The development places strong emphasis on health, movement, social interaction, and biodiversity. A 4,500 m² courtyard garden will serve as a central green space for nature and community activities.

Architecture and urban design are led by KCAP, Monk Architecten, Studio Nauta, and Flux Landscape Architecture. The full city block is scheduled for completion in 2029, with the first homes ready for handover from 2027.

Grow will deliver 575 residential units: 188 social rental apartments, 140 mid-range and private-sector rental homes, and 247 owner-occupied apartments. Supporting amenities include a health centre, daycare centre, fitness facilities, office spaces, and various commercial units.

Mobility solutions prioritise sustainability, with parking for more than 1,900 bicycles and a public garage offering 380 car spaces.

The project forms part of Utrecht's wider Merwede urban renewal programme, which aims to create around 6,000 new homes in the coming years while promoting green, inclusive, and livable city living.
