Wedoany.com Report-Dec.3, Germany's Federal Government has approved €421 million in funding for construction of a new high-level bridge across the Peene River at Wolgast in northern Germany.

A new bridge spanning the Peenestrom is planned for Wolgast in Germany as the existing bascule bridge is no longer able to cope with traffic demand

The new Peene Bridge, awarded to Swiss contractor Implenia Civil Engineering, will replace the existing bascule bridge that currently serves both road and rail traffic to the island of Usedom. Frequent opening of the old lift bridge causes significant delays for vehicles and trains, as it struggles to meet growing transport demand.

The 1.4-kilometre fixed bridge will feature 70-metre-high support towers and provide 42 metres of vertical clearance beneath, eliminating the need for a movable span and allowing uninterrupted passage for river traffic.

It forms the centrepiece of a larger 6.8-kilometre bypass project, with a total estimated cost of €500 million, that will carry federal highway B111 over the Peenestrom waterway and connect directly to the A20 autobahn.

The new infrastructure will substantially improve regional connectivity, reduce congestion on the route to Usedom – a major tourist destination – and enhance reliability for both passenger and freight transport.

Construction of the bridge and associated bypass is expected to proceed following final planning and preparatory work, delivering a permanent solution to a long-standing bottleneck in northern Germany's transport network.
