As part of its over £22 billion grid investment plan in northern Scotland, SSEN Transmission has committed to building more than 300 legacy homes in Aberdeenshire. The plan aims to boost regional economic development and is expected to drive up to £820 million in local economic growth.
The project is anticipated to create approximately 1,140 jobs in Aberdeenshire and unlock £32 million in community benefit investments. The new residential area will first be used to house workers involved in the grid upgrade to support the related infrastructure construction. The company announced its first residential project last December, planning to build 69 homes in Turriff, Aberdeenshire, in collaboration with Springfield.
Paul Cooley, Director of Onshore Capital Delivery at SSEN Transmission, stated: "Investing in a modern grid is inextricably linked to building stronger communities in Aberdeenshire. We are committed to contributing through job creation, residential development, and supporting local businesses." Russell Borthwick, Chief Executive of Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce, believes this investment is crucial for seizing clean energy opportunities and consolidating the region's energy position.
By combining grid upgrades with supporting residential development, the plan aims to drive long-term regional prosperity and energy transition.
