Maputo – The Mozambican government recently stated that approximately $644 million is needed for infrastructure repair work to address the damage caused by flood disasters. The floods have affected large parts of the southern and central regions of the country.
According to preliminary statistics from the National Institute for Disaster Management, heavy rains damaged 3,447 houses and completely destroyed 771. Additionally, 229 medical units and 431 schools were affected. The road network also suffered severe damage, with approximately 1,336.5 kilometers of roads impacted, including sections of National Highway No. 1.
Government spokesperson Inocêncio Impissa stated after a Council of Ministers meeting that this data has been incorporated into the post-flood reconstruction plan. He said, "The plan aims to ensure a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable recovery of the socio-economic situation through a comprehensive, coordinated stabilization and reconstruction strategy."
Impissa noted that the reconstruction plan will adopt resilience strategies to enable infrastructure to better withstand extreme weather events. He emphasized, "By approving the strategic direction of this plan, the government reaffirms its commitment to leading a transformative process that will structurally reduce the impact of floods and enhance national resilience." The post-flood reconstruction work in Mozambique is expected to focus on repairing damaged infrastructure and restoring north-south transportation links.
