Wedoany.com Report on Feb 12th, The Westminster Council in the UK has approved a £1.49 million accessibility plan aimed at enhancing the safety of pedestrian crossings and bringing pedestrian crossing facilities in line with national guidelines. The plan will focus on improving the color contrast and consistency of tactile paving, prioritizing high-traffic areas such as schools, hospitals, and transport hubs.

Previously, Westminster’s planning standards differed from national accessibility guidelines, resulting in tactile paving lacking sufficient contrast and not extending adequately onto footpaths, making it difficult for visually impaired individuals to identify. The new investment will adjust these designs to ensure all signalized crossings and pedestrian crossings meet regulatory requirements.
The development of the plan extensively incorporated feedback from disability organizations such as RNIB, Transport for All, and Dementia UK. One participant commented: "I like the high-contrast design. This embedded solution is noticeable even for those with normal vision."
Cllr Max Sullivan, Cabinet Member for Streets, emphasized: "In the past, tactile paving did not meet national standards, causing inconvenience for blind and visually impaired people. Updating our planning and investing this funding will enable visually impaired and other disabled individuals to travel more safely and confidently. Combined with strict enforcement against footpath obstructions, this is an important step toward a fairer, more accessible Westminster."
At a workshop, Mahen Kawol, Admiral Nurse from the CNWL Foundation NHS Trust, noted: "High-quality tactile paving helps people with dementia and visual impairments navigate more safely, reducing confusion and enhancing independence and dignity."
The accessibility upgrade works are expected to commence this year and will be implemented in phases to minimize traffic disruption. This initiative is a key part of Westminster Council's efforts to promote accessibility in public spaces, encourage active travel, and enhance connectivity, aiming to provide a safer crossing environment for all residents and visitors.
