Wedoany.com Report on Feb 26th, Production of key high-voltage components for the second Malta-Italy power interconnector has commenced at the BEST manufacturing facility in Turkey. These high-voltage components include two reactors and one transformer, with the manufacturing process expected to take approximately three months.

The power interconnector, designated as IC2, will deploy a new high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) cable with a length of approximately 122 kilometers and a capacity of 225 megawatts. It will connect Terna's substation in Ragusa, Sicily, Italy, with Enemalta's terminal station in Maghtab, Malta, running parallel to the existing cable.

The key high-voltage components are being delivered by the local contractor AG Installations, under a contract valued at €20.2 million. This infrastructure will be installed at both the Maghtab and Ragusa sites for voltage control and to enhance energy transmission efficiency.

Miriam Dalli, Malta's Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness, stated, "The work by Malta Interconnector Ltd is progressing well, and our country will soon have a second interconnector." She added, "This is part of our energy vision. Apart from investing in and strengthening supply and distribution systems, we are also continuing to increase our investment in renewable energy and battery storage systems. We are ensuring Malta has a more resilient, stronger, and more diversified energy mix. This vision, work, and investment have even been recognized internationally; in fact, the International Monetary Fund recently highlighted the strong progress our country has made in energy security."

The overall cable system for the second Malta-Italy power interconnector is being manufactured by Nexans, the company that also delivered the first interconnector in 2015. The new system includes 245 kV high-voltage submarine cables. The overall route consists of approximately 21 kilometers of land cable in Sicily, about 99 kilometers of three-core submarine cable, and 2 kilometers of land cable in Malta.
