Wedoany.com Report, In early March, Kazakh Minister of Transport Nurlan Sauranbayev disclosed the latest progress in highway infrastructure development at a government meeting in Astana. The country is accelerating the construction of a national-level road network as its backbone, supported by local roads, to meet standards and build international corridors, providing hardware support for cross-border logistics and regional economic integration.
Current Road Network Status and Three-Year Upgrade Goals
Kazakhstan's total public road length is 95,000 kilometers, including 25,000 kilometers of national highways, of which 94% meet standards; and 70,000 kilometers of local roads, with 91% complying with standards. Over the next three years, the scale of local road expansion and repair will increase fivefold, with 32,000 kilometers of local roads expected to achieve a 95% compliance rate.
Relevant regulatory revisions, standard updates, and implementation are currently being advanced simultaneously.
International Corridors Taking Shape, Traffic Drives Upgrades
Kazakhstan has established seven international highway corridors to ensure regional connectivity.
Four key projects, including Karbatau - Maikapshagai, have been completed, with a total length of 2,000 kilometers. Due to rising traffic volumes, some corridors are operating at capacity, and the modernization of certain sections has been incorporated into planning.
Infrastructure Implementation and Corridor Efficiency Improvement
The government is promoting standard updates and inter-departmental coordination, with local agencies already initiating implementation. Separate management of national and local roads, along with the prioritized completion of key cross-border corridors, has created a pattern of "smooth mainlines and regional coverage." The renovation of saturated sections will continue to enhance the efficiency of transit and domestic logistics.
