Wedoany.com Report on Mar 13th, NSW Premier Chris Minns has officially launched the construction of the Bungendore Blind Creek Solar Farm and Battery Project in Bungendore, marking a significant step in Australia's clean energy transition. With a total investment of $900 million, the project, featuring core battery systems supplied by Wärtsilä Energy Storage, aims to integrate a 300 MW solar farm with a 243 MW/486 MWh battery energy storage system. As coal-fired power plants are gradually retired across the Asia-Pacific region, the Blind Creek project serves as a practical case study for replacing fossil fuels while maintaining grid reliability, offering a replicable model for other countries.
The battery system is designed to store excess solar energy during the day and dispatch power during evening peak hours, effectively mitigating the intermittency of solar supply and ensuring stable grid operation after sunset. The project reflects three key trends in the clean energy sector: stable renewable energy is attracting investors, with the Blind Creek project securing financing from institutions such as Dutch APG, Hostplus, Rest, CEFC, and Westpac; the agrivoltaics model is gaining popularity, as the solar farm layout allows for concurrent agricultural activities like sheep grazing, enhancing community acceptance; clear timelines increase project viability, with construction starting this year and full operation expected by 2028.
A representative from Wärtsilä Energy Storage stated that large-scale battery systems can accelerate the phase-out of coal in Australia and beyond, and the implementation of the Blind Creek project provides a practical example for the global energy transition. This progress highlights Australia's efforts in advancing renewable energy development, contributing to a more sustainable energy future.
