Wedoany.com Report on Mar 13th, According to the latest analysis from Alphaliner, Danish shipping company Maersk has become the fastest-growing carrier on intra-Europe routes over the past year. Its market share increased from 8.5% in February 2025 to the current 12.1%, with capacity growing from 101,500 TEU to 146,500 TEU, marking the largest expansion in this trade lane. Maersk deployed 49 container ships, and the average vessel size has also increased.
Alphaliner reported: "Maersk's high growth in capacity and market share is primarily driven by the 'hub-and-spoke' network implemented with its 'Gemini' partner Hapag-Lloyd." Hapag-Lloyd's capacity decreased by 18,000 TEU, and its market share dropped from 2.8% to 1.3%, now providing more services through slot agreements.
The total capacity on intra-Europe routes currently stands at 1.21 million TEU, a mere 1.9% increase compared to the same period last year, aligning with the 2.3% cargo volume growth trend in 2025. Freight rates have generally remained stable, but recent declines may prompt carriers to strengthen capacity management.
Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) consolidated its leading position, increasing capacity by 30,000 TEU, achieving a market share of 30.6%, and launching nine new services, including routes from the Baltic Sea to Morocco. CMA CGM, as the second-largest carrier, grew capacity by 27,500 TEU, raising its market share to 19.2%.
The dominance of mainline operators in the intra-Europe feeder segment has strengthened, with their combined market share reaching 74.6%. COSCO Group, Unifeeder, and X-Press Feeders occupy the top spots respectively. Among Turkish carriers, Arkas saw a reduction in capacity, while Akkon Lines achieved significant growth, rising to the tenth position. Alphaliner stated: "Akkon Lines achieved the biggest leap among European operators by launching new routes."
