en.Wedoany.com Reported - Network Rail has launched a flagship £8.8 million Maintenance Delivery Unit (MDU) in Barnetby, North Lincolnshire, to enhance operational support capabilities for the regional railway network.
The MDU, providing a dedicated base for railway maintenance teams, was put into use on June 1 and officially opened on June 10. The new facility replaces century-old infrastructure, consolidating maintenance teams from Grimsby, Barnetby, and Scunthorpe into a single location.
Designed as a demonstration project for the company's "Greener Railway" strategy, which supports Network Rail's goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050, the two-story timber building features sustainable characteristics including a low-carbon structure, air source heat pumps, triple-glazed windows, and rooftop solar panels, making it the company's first net zero operational MDU.
Over 100 maintenance staff are based on site, with facilities including a canteen, changing and shower areas, accessible toilets, meeting rooms, and office space. Covering an area of 9,000 square meters, the site provides parking for 50 vans and 66 staff vehicles, along with 22 electric vehicle charging points. Biodiversity net gain has been achieved through landscaping, planting 11 trees and over 400 plants, and installing bat boxes. Acoustic fencing has also been installed to reduce noise impact on nearby residents.
The facility has received national recognition, being shortlisted in the Sustainability and Environmental Excellence category of the Rail Business Awards 2026. Network Rail stated that the Barnetby MDU will serve as a template for future sites, with its design already influencing a similar project underway in Sheffield.
George Drum, Network Rail's Infrastructure Director, said: "Our new MDU in Barnetby is a significant investment in our colleagues, operations, and the future of the railway, providing a modern, sustainable facility for the team while supporting key freight and passenger routes across the region. We are proud that the site has already gained national recognition for its sustainability credentials and sets a standard for the design and construction of future maintenance hubs." The project has also brought benefits to the local community, including flower beds for the village and a defibrillator donated to Barnetby United Football Club. Students from North Lincolnshire College gained work experience on the site with main contractor HBC Construction.
