en.Wedoany.com Report on Mar 21st, Star Flight Training in Roanoke, Virginia, has recently added four Tecnam P-Mentor aircraft equipped for Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) operations to its fleet in preparation for the spring flight training season. These four new aircraft will operate alongside the school's existing five Diamond DA40-180 aircraft, enhancing its training capacity.
According to the manufacturer Tecnam, the P-Mentor training aircraft significantly reduces fuel consumption compared to traditional models, helping the school extend training mission durations while lowering operating costs and environmental impact. The aircraft's modern cockpit technology also ensures that students gain exposure to advanced equipment relevant to their future aviation careers.
Matt Hunt, Office Manager at Star Flight Training, stated, "We are committed to providing high-quality flight training with the best equipment. The Tecnam P-Mentor delivers a highly praised training experience for our students." This Part 61 flight school, located at Roanoke–Blacksburg Regional Airport (KROA), runs an intensive training program, and the new aircraft will serve both career-oriented students and recreational pilots.
Hunt added, "Last year, we completed approximately 5,000 hours of instruction, with 50 students taking check rides. The reduced maintenance costs associated with the Rotax 912 engine platform are expected to make flight training more accessible. Our average fuel consumption has decreased from about 9 gallons per hour with the Diamond aircraft to around 4 gallons per hour with the Tecnam P-Mentor."
Richard Donnelly, the school's Director of Operations, noted, "This aircraft combines excellent fuel efficiency, modern avionics, and superb handling characteristics, making it an ideal platform for training from primary to advanced levels. The reduced fuel reserve helps maintain operational efficiency." He emphasized that the P-Mentor consumes roughly half the fuel of traditional training aircraft, supporting extended training missions throughout the day.
Tecnam stated that the P-Mentor represents a new generation of training aircraft, specifically designed to help students progress from initial stages to advanced certifications through an optimized airframe and advanced avionics suite.
