en.Wedoany.com Report on Mar 28th, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) in India has recently inaugurated the country's first ports of refuge, aimed at effectively managing distressed vessels and responding to maritime emergencies. This new facility provides a structured refuge mechanism for ships, helping to stabilize vessel conditions and control potential environmental damage. Its establishment complies with relevant standards set by the International Maritime Organization.

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone handles close to 27% of the national port cargo volume. It has designated Dighi Port on the west coast and Gopalpur Port on the east coast as the specific locations for these ports of refuge. Dighi Port will serve traffic in the Arabian Sea region, while Gopalpur Port will provide support for vessels in the Bay of Bengal.

These ports of refuge are equipped with specialized equipment and trained emergency teams capable of providing services such as firefighting, pollution control, and salvage operations. APSEZ stated that this infrastructure will cover vessels insured with the International Group of P&I Clubs, ensuring broader applicability.

To enhance coordinated response capabilities, APSEZ has signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding with SMIT Salvage and the Marine Emergency Response Centre, introducing external expertise to optimize operations. Director General of Shipping, Shyam Jagannathan, commented on this: "The adoption of a standardized port of refuge framework will enable more coordinated and timely actions during maritime incidents, ensuring effective protection of life, cargo, and the coastal environment." He noted that this initiative significantly strengthens India's emergency response capabilities and maritime preparedness.
