en.Wedoany.com Reported - Recently, Lufthansa Technik Malta successfully completed the first cabin retrofit for a Boeing 787. This retrofit targeted a 787-9 aircraft operated by Lufthansa, involving seat layout updates and a comprehensive upgrade of cabin facilities. To accommodate the Boeing 787 retrofit requirements, the company modified an existing facility in Malta. This maintenance service provider plans to complete six more similar Boeing 787 cabin retrofit projects by the end of this year.

Lufthansa Technik Malta is a joint venture established in 2002 between Lufthansa Technik and Malta Airlines. A year ago, Lufthansa Technik announced plans to establish a Widebody Center of Excellence in Malta, dedicated to base maintenance and cabin retrofit operations. As part of this plan, Lufthansa Technik is constructing a new hangar covering 6,400 square meters, capable of accommodating one widebody aircraft and three narrowbody aircraft. The new facility will connect to existing buildings, bringing the total capacity to four hangars, and is expected to be operational by the end of 2026.

Markus Motsenbacher, Vice President of Aircraft Maintenance Services and Chief Operating Officer at Lufthansa Technik, stated: "The Boeing 787 platform requires specialized technical support. Our ability to complete this retrofit on time and precisely demonstrates that we are well-prepared for more widebody aircraft projects in the future."

In June 2024, Lufthansa Technik signed an agreement with Boeing to become a Boeing Authorized Service Center. This authorization enables Lufthansa Technik, as an external maintenance supplier, to obtain approval for performing interior modifications on Boeing 787 aircraft. In addition to the Boeing 787, Lufthansa Technik Malta also provides line and base maintenance services for aircraft types such as Airbus A320, A320neo, A330/340, and A350. The company employs approximately 600 staff near Malta International Airport.

Lindsey Douglas, Vice President of Cabin, Modifications, Maintenance, and Digital Services at Boeing, added: "According to Aviation Week's forecast data, the partnership with Lufthansa Technik will expand post-delivery modification options for the Boeing 787 fleet. Currently, there are over 1,300 Boeing 787 aircraft in operation globally." Douglas further stated: "As a Boeing Authorized Service Center, Lufthansa Technik will enhance key technical capabilities to provide customized cabin retrofit solutions for the fleet."
