Wedoany.com Report-Dec 20, The decision builds on the current mix of 90 percent hydropower and 10 percent nuclear energy, supported by a small share of solar power.

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB CFF FFS) has announced it will supply all traction power for its trains from 100 percent renewable energy sources starting January 1, 2025.

SBB operates Switzerland's second-largest electricity network, specifically for railway operations. The network includes eight hydroelectric plants owned by SBB, stakes in five additional plants, 70 substations, and an 1,800-kilometer-long transmission system. Together, these facilities generate approximately 2,000 gigawatt hours of electricity annually, enough to supply 500,000 households for one year.

Hydropower remains central to SBB's energy strategy. Leveraging Switzerland's abundant water resources, SBB's plants are positioned to provide stable and flexible power generation. Facilities like the Etzelwerk storage hydroelectric plant on Lake Sihl function as energy reserves, generating power when demand peaks, particularly in winter or during high traffic periods.

To complement hydropower, SBB plans to expand its solar energy production. By 2040, the company aims to generate 160 gigawatt hours annually, with an interim target of 100 gigawatt hours by 2030. Much of the potential lies in utilizing the roofs of workshops and other facilities.

SBB’s energy strategy also prioritizes consumption optimization. Measures such as "green wave" technology, which ensures trains operate smoothly without unnecessary stops, help reduce energy usage while minimizing wear on infrastructure.

The long-term strategy includes producing 95 percent of SBB’s winter energy demand internally by 2030. This will involve further investment in modernizing hydroelectric facilities and expanding solar power. Over 200 measures have been identified to save 850 gigawatt hours annually, balancing increased energy demands resulting from expanded rail services.
