en.Wedoany.com Reported - Recently, entrusted by Chinese Minister of Natural Resources Guan Zhiou, Xu Dachun, Vice Minister of Natural Resources of China and Director of the China Geological Survey, met with a delegation led by Nurdaim Mohamed Ahmed Taha, Minister of Mining of Sudan, in Beijing. The two sides held talks on further deepening cooperation between China and Sudan in the field of geology and minerals. Both parties plan to renew the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation and will strengthen collaboration in areas such as basic geological surveys, geological mapping, geophysics, and geochemistry, advancing the cooperative project on geological and mineral surveys in Sudan.
Cooperation between China and Sudan in the field of geology and minerals has a long history. In 2010, China's Ministry of Land and Resources and Sudan's Ministry of Mining signed the first Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in geology and minerals. In 2013, the China Geological Survey and the Geological Survey of Sudan officially launched a cooperative project on geochemical mapping and mineral resource assessment in two prospective areas: Kassala and North Kordofan. Since then, the Wuhan Center of the China Geological Survey has visited Sudan multiple times for cooperation, implementing projects such as the "Demonstration of 1:250,000 Geological and Geochemical Survey in Northeastern Sudan" and the "Resource Potential Assessment in Eastern Sudan and 1:100,000 Geological and Geochemical Survey in Key Areas." These projects completed geological and geochemical survey tasks in several work blocks, including the Red Sea State and Kassala State, cumulatively discovering 18 mineral occurrences and training 11 Sudanese geologists. To date, a total of 23 Chinese enterprises have been engaged in mining investment and operations in Sudan, with cumulative investment exceeding $100 million, covering exploration and mining of gold, chromite, black sand, and marble.
During the talks, both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in basic geological surveys, geological mapping, geophysics, and geochemistry under the framework of the renewed Memorandum of Understanding. The two sides will also utilize platforms such as the China International Mining Conference and the China-Africa Geoscience Cooperation Center to jointly enhance the capacity and level of mineral resource surveys. Meanwhile, China will provide targeted technical training for Sudanese personnel in areas such as geophysics, geochemistry, remote sensing, and laboratory construction, as well as strengthen academic exchanges and personnel visits.
Nurdaim Taha assumed the position of Minister of Mining of Sudan in July 2025. Previously, he served as the media affairs assistant to the leader of the Sudan Liberation Movement, Minni Arko Minawi, and participated in the negotiations of the Juba Peace Agreement. Sudan is rich in mineral resources, and the mining industry is one of the important pillars of the country's economy. This meeting will further promote practical cooperation between China and Sudan in the field of geology and minerals, helping Sudan enhance its capacity for mineral resource survey and development.
