en.Wedoany.com Reported - During the sixth phase of construction on the Derby Riverside flood defence project in the UK, contractor Ivor King deployed a Gyro Piler rotary piling rig manufactured by Japan's Giken. The machine installs tubular piles into the ground using a rotary method rather than traditional impact driving, minimising disruption to the surrounding environment.

The Gyro Piler rig was assembled on site prior to commencing work. After completing the installation of each pile, it moves itself along the installed piles to the next position. This rotary press-in technology was chosen primarily to reduce the impact on the operation of the neighbouring Smithfield pub. The project team also adjusted the flood wall alignment so that the pub sits on the dry side of the wall, ensuring its beer garden could remain open throughout the construction period.

Lee Long, Project Director for main contractor Sisk, said: "We have now completed approximately 70% of all piling work, which is very rapid progress considering we only started in January." He added: "The team is proud of the sixth phase installation; we have overcome significant technical challenges. Keeping the Smithfield beer garden open throughout construction is the icing on the cake." Sisk has begun installing the first section of reinforced concrete wall adjacent to Exeter House and plans to accelerate construction over the next three months, taking advantage of the summer weather.

The Derby flood defence project is part of the City Council's £35 million "Our City, Our River" regeneration and flood defence scheme, delivered in partnership with the Environment Agency. Work commenced in full in May 2025, progressing simultaneously across eight phases. To date, piling work on five phases has been successfully completed, with the application of the Gyro Piler rig playing a key role.
