en.Wedoany.com Reported - Siemens has built an on-site microgrid at its plant in Wendell, North Carolina, USA. The microgrid consists of a 1.25 MW solar carport and a 3.9 MWh battery energy storage system.

Together with other energy initiatives on the campus, this microgrid enables the site to achieve carbon neutrality, reducing total grid energy consumption by 2.5 MWh annually. Siemens has set a corporate goal of achieving a net-zero carbon footprint by 2030. The microgrid will maintain energy supply during grid outages, ensuring that the production of medium-voltage power equipment can continue.

Representative Deborah Ross (D) stated: "There is no question that we must do more to lower energy costs for North Carolinians and strengthen the resilience of our grid. I am grateful to see Siemens increasing its innovation investment in Wendell, which will expand access to clean, reliable energy."

The microgrid solution is built using Siemens products, including the SICAM A8000 microgrid controller, fire protection solutions, low-voltage distribution cabinets, low-voltage bolted pressure switches, KACO string inverters, SIPROTEC universal relays, and other hardware solutions. On-site Siemens VersiCharge electric vehicle charging stations are also connected to the microgrid, allowing EVs to be charged by self-generated solar power.

Brian Dula, President of Electrification and Automation at Siemens USA, said: "The microgrid we have integrated at our Wendell campus is one of the most advanced microgrids available on the market today. It truly showcases Siemens' end-to-end portfolio, from power generation to consumption, demonstrating not only how we improve our own operational efficiency but also what we can offer our customers." Siemens is currently collaborating with Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh to build a campus microgrid.
