en.Wedoany.com Reported - Construction has begun on a £4.6 million affordable housing development of 14 homes in Lochaline, on the Morvern Peninsula in the West Highlands.

Architecture firm G+GA, based in Dollar, designed the project, with TSL Contractors leading construction on behalf of The Morvern Community Development Company. The two- and three-bedroom homes are expected to welcome tenants by summer 2027.
Offered at affordable rents for those wishing to live and work in Morvern, the project has received substantial funding from the Scottish Government through the Rural and Islands Housing Fund, along with financial support from The Highland Council.
The design of the 14 homes aims to harmonise with the local rural and coastal landscape, with building massing and density reflecting and respecting local vernacular character. Recognisable West Scottish forms and materials have been used to reduce the development's visual impact. A "simple and considered" palette of materials includes metal standing seam roofing, locally sourced timber cladding, and gabion baskets for retaining walls.
Richard Graves, Director of G+GA and project architect, stated that the team applies a "fabric-first" approach across all projects. The homes are well-insulated, with all main living areas oriented south to maximise solar gain, requiring only low-cost electric heating.
The project aims to minimise and mitigate ecological impact, with extensive native planting using local species and low-impact hard landscaping materials to ensure sensitive integration with the existing landscape and surroundings. Richard noted that this is one of the largest community-led housing developments currently under construction in Scotland, seen as a once-in-a-generation housing project that will significantly increase living space for Lochaline's small population of around 200 people.
