en.Wedoany.com Reported - Bangladesh's Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Zahir Uddin Swapon, urged the country's ICT experts to quickly draft and submit an effective national action plan to address cyber risks and ensure online security.

Swapon made the call during a roundtable discussion organized by the National ICT Forum (NICTF) at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in Ramna, the capital. The discussion was themed "Combating Fake News in Bangladesh: Policy, Technology, and Responsibility."

Swapon stated that the creation of fake news through artificial intelligence (AI) and its dissemination via social media has become one of the major strategic challenges. He added that cyber risks and digital harms pose serious threats to individuals, society, and the nation.

Addressing ICT professionals, Swapon noted that the current government is more proactive than ever in involving experts in policy-making to build a knowledge-based nation. Referring to the global trend of holding tech giants like Meta Platforms, Google, and X Corp accountable and subjecting them to regulation, he said mainstream media outlets invest heavily in content creation, but digital platforms profit from this content without compensation. He stated that countries around the world, including Australia, are introducing laws requiring royalty payments to content creators. Swapon emphasized the need to place Bangladesh's digital platforms under a structured and accountable regulatory framework.

During the event, BNP's ICT Affairs Secretary AKM Wahiduzzaman, former Member of Parliament and convener of the Engineers Association of Bangladesh (EAB), Engineer Shahrin Islam Tuhin, also spoke. The event was moderated by senior leaders of the organization and attracted leading ICT experts, researchers, and journalists from across the country. Other speakers highlighted the importance of using modern technological tools to identify propaganda and fake news spread on social media, and recommended strengthening the capacity of mainstream media while expanding digital literacy and information awareness among marginalized communities.
