en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MEPhI), part of the National Research Nuclear University, together with the Big MEPhI consortium and the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom), is developing a project for ultra-small nuclear reactors specifically designed to power data centers. This was announced by Valery Romanyuk, Vice-Rector of MEPhI and Chairman of the Big MEPhI consortium, during the 2026 St. Petersburg International Energy Forum.
Romanyuk stated that the subprogram aims to develop ultra-small nuclear reactors with capacities ranging from 5 MW to 50 MW as independent power sources for data centers. He noted that with the continuous growth of global data center loads, MEPhI is creating a dedicated institutional division to advance this field. The plan also includes solving data center optimization problems based on artificial intelligence and developing network infrastructure.
The Big MEPhI consortium is a platform that fosters collaboration between universities and large companies interested in developing complex projects in the nuclear, quantum, and information sectors.
