Schultz spent nine years at Google, previously worked there for eight years starting in 2005, and served as Director of Network Engineering at PlayStation Now for two and a half years. Nearly a year after leaving Google, Schultz decided to join SpaceX. He said that after successfully dodging various job opportunities for nearly a year, he encountered something he couldn't miss.

SpaceX currently operates approximately 9,600 Starlink broadband and mobile satellites, and plans to begin deploying next-generation V3 satellites later this year, with downlink capacity of up to 1 terabit per second. The company acquired xAI earlier this year and has already leased some data center capacity to Anthropic and Google. The combined business aims to deploy up to 1 million satellites, forming a mega data center constellation. SpaceX detailed the AI1 satellite design earlier this week and plans to go public this Friday, June 12.
