en.Wedoany.com Reported - Robotaxi company Waymo announced that the retired power batteries used by its fleet will no longer be sent to recycling centers but will be repurposed to support the power grid. Waymo stated that through a partnership with B2U Storage Solutions, these large, heavy, and energy-intensive batteries will be used to store clean energy after their lifespan ends. The goal is not a one-time implementation but to build grid-scale energy storage systems.

Adam Lenz, Waymo's Head of Sustainability and Environment, noted that shared electric vehicle fleets offer a significant opportunity to support the growth of clean energy on the grid while expanding the circular economy. He emphasized the importance of these batteries continuing to provide economic and environmental value after retirement.

Waymo said the program will be combined with solar energy, with batteries primarily used to store excess energy generated during peak sunlight hours at noon, then distribute that electricity during the evening peak demand period. Waymo noted that the process is essentially plug-and-play, with batteries coming from vehicles and capable of being connected to the grid for energy storage within days.

The initial deployments will take place in Texas and California, two states with substantial grid support needs and where Waymo's fleet is based. Fellow automaker General Motors (GM) recently revealed that it is expanding the use of different battery chemistries for various applications, particularly enhancing vehicle-to-grid connectivity. The automaker aims to leverage the growth of AI data center development, using its batteries to help alleviate pressure on national utilities.
