Eng. John Tanui, Principal Secretary for Information Communication Technology and the Digital Economy, stated that Kenya is increasingly becoming a preferred destination for global data center and AI infrastructure. He emphasized that improved connectivity, supportive regulations, renewable energy assets, and growing regional demand are key competitive advantages. Tanui made these remarks at a stakeholder consultation forum on industry policy and regulatory frameworks.

Currently, Kenya's data center ecosystem includes Safaricom, Oracle, Liquid Intelligent Technologies, iColo Data Centre, and the government-owned Konza National Data Centre. The continuous expansion of terrestrial fiber optic networks has also enhanced the country's regional connectivity.

The aforementioned consultation forum brought together the ICT Authority, Kenya Revenue Authority, Office of the Data Protection Commissioner, Telecommunications Service Providers Association of Kenya (TESPOK), Special Economic Zones Authority, and representatives from multiple private operators. Discussions focused on regulatory reforms, policy incentives, and public-private partnerships to deepen digital infrastructure capabilities across industries.

Oracle's recent decision to establish a cloud region in Kenya is seen as a sign of growing international confidence in the country's infrastructure and long-term investment prospects. Infrastructure development is progressing in tandem with industry-specific AI integration. Kenya has partnered with Google to deploy AI-driven tools in the tourism sector, including the Tourism Pulse Data Hub built on Google Cloud and an AI travel planner offering personalized itineraries.

Rebecca Miano, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, stated that the initiative supports Kenya's transformation into a smart tourism destination. Alex Okosi, Managing Director of Google Africa, noted that the collaboration aims to build a more resilient and inclusive tourism ecosystem.

The government stated that expanded cloud and data infrastructure will support broader AI applications in key sectors such as agriculture, finance, and healthcare, which are crucial to Kenya's broader economic transformation agenda.
