en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Indonesian Ministry of Environment/Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH) is promoting a mangrove planting program aimed at restoring Bali's coastal ecosystem and supporting the national target of planting 20 billion trees. Environment Minister Moh Jumhur Hidayat led a mangrove planting activity at the Arboretum Park in Tanjung Benoa, Bali.
The Arboretum Park, covering 12 hectares, previously experienced significant vegetation loss due to environmental pressures but has now been fully restored into a mangrove habitat, currently hosting approximately 300,000 trees across 12 mangrove species. The park is regarded as a natural barrier against climate impacts.
Minister Jumhur stated that planting mangroves is not only about greening coastal areas but also about proving that environmental degradation can be reversed through collective will and public participation. He noted that Bali's success should serve as a model for other regions across the country.
He emphasized that mangrove restoration is part of Indonesia's 20 billion tree plan, with the key being to ensure the recovery of coastal ecosystems and the sustained generation of ecological, social, and economic benefits. Indonesia currently has approximately 3.45 million hectares of mangroves, accounting for about 23% of the world's total mangrove area.
Jumhur stated that mangroves are a natural defense for protecting coastlines, and the Ministry is committed to turning the Arboretum Park into a national natural laboratory and education center for mangrove restoration, with its experience replicable to small island regions.
In addition to coastal ecosystems, the Ministry also praised the efforts of Bali Province and local governments in waste management. Through an integrated management system, several areas in Bali have achieved near-zero waste status. Jumhur noted that these achievements need to be maintained, with further improvements in waste processing techniques, such as converting waste into fuel or fertilizer.
Bali Governor I Wayan Koster stated that the province is committed to protecting nature based on the local Tri Hita Karana philosophy (promoting harmony among humans, nature, and spirit), and called for island-wide efforts to achieve 100% waste sorting.
By strengthening cooperation between the central government, local governments, and the public, the Ministry expressed confidence in achieving Indonesia's broader climate recovery agenda and the 20 billion tree planting target.
