en.Wedoany.com Reported - Siberian State Medical University (SibGMU) and ITMO University have jointly launched an educational module titled "Artificial Intelligence Technologies for Solving Urgent Healthcare Problems," which will be offered to fifth-year students in the "Medical Cybernetics" track of the Faculty of Medical Biology starting September 2026. This collaboration is one of the few examples in Russian universities where medical expertise is deeply integrated with top-tier IT capabilities, aiming to cultivate a new generation of specialists who understand both human physiology and mathematical algorithms.
The module is implemented within the framework of the "Priority-2030" program and is part of the strategic development of SibGMU's Faculty of Medical Biology. The faculty continues to expand its technological base and introduce modern educational formats, focusing on training specialists proficient in artificial intelligence and other digital tools—future doctors will learn to process big data, apply machine learning algorithms in clinical practice, and use advanced technologies for diagnosis and treatment. Dean Yulia Kolobovnikova noted that ITMO University, a leader in information and photonic technologies, was chosen as a strategic partner to expose students to top-tier expertise in data science and artificial intelligence.
The module is delivered in a network format jointly by SibGMU's Faculty of Medical Biology, ITMO University's Mega Faculty of Translational Information Technologies, and the "Artificial Intelligence" Teaching Methodology Center. The curriculum covers the application of artificial intelligence in medicine, the specifics of AI modeling for medical tasks, the potential of generative AI and large language models in healthcare, the development and operational principles of medical decision support systems, as well as analyzing medical data for diagnosis and result interpretation, and solving personalized medicine tasks. The module is developed based on competency role models in the AI field, includes the competencies required for future medical cybernetics specialists, and ensures alignment with professional standards.
Aleksandra Klimova, head of the "Artificial Intelligence" Teaching Methodology Center and deputy head of the Mega Faculty of Translational Information Technologies at ITMO University, stated that the module was developed within the framework of a project by the Ministry of Digital Development to train top-tier AI specialists, aiming to transfer best practices to universities teaching AI technologies across various industries. The training will also focus on skills in managing medical resources and processes, while strictly adhering to ethical and regulatory requirements for AI applications in healthcare.
Starting September 2026, the courses will be taught by associate professors from the Department of Medical Biocybernetics at SibGMU, who will integrate the technical knowledge gained from their ITMO University colleagues into clinical settings. The collaboration aims to produce graduates capable of developing, implementing, and critically evaluating AI algorithms, serving as a bridge between IT and practical healthcare.
