en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) recently conducted a large-scale clean-up intervention in the Apapa area, clearing multiple long-standing "black spots" of indiscriminate waste dumping to restore environmental cleanliness and promote sustainable waste management across the state. The targeted clean-up operation, carried out on Thursday, covered Marine Beach, Warehouse Road, Randle Road, Mobile Road, and other identified black spots within the Apapa area.
At the operation site, LAWMA's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, reaffirmed the agency's determination to eliminate indiscriminate waste dumping in Lagos, warning that violators would face sanctions under existing environmental laws. He noted that the recurrent accumulation of waste at these sites was linked to some residents and businesses bypassing approved waste collection channels in an attempt to evade waste management service fees. Gbadegesin stated: "Many individuals generating waste at these locations are not enrolled in the formal PSP system. Consequently, despite repeated clean-ups by LAWMA and PSP operators, the waste keeps reappearing. We cannot continue to expend public resources cleaning the same sites while some persist in illegal waste disposal."
Gbadegesin lamented that substantial public resources are routinely used to clear illegal waste dumps across the city, yet some sites are re-contaminated shortly after clean-up. He emphasized that keeping Lagos cleaner requires shared responsibility among government agencies, residents, businesses, market operators, and institutions through responsible waste disposal practices. To this end, LAWMA is expanding waste collection options by deploying tricycle compactors and other innovative collection systems to improve waste clearance in areas inaccessible to traditional compactors. Meanwhile, the agency is working to integrate willing cart pushers into a structured and regulated waste collection framework, aiming to address indiscriminate dumping at its source and improve collection services in underserved communities.
Gbadegesin further encouraged residents to sort waste at the source, separating recyclable materials such as plastics, paper, cardboard, glass, and aluminum from general waste. He stated: "A significant portion of materials currently disposed of as waste still holds economic value and can be repurposed through recycling and resource recovery programs. By sorting waste at the source, residents can contribute to the circular economy while supporting environmental sustainability." He insisted that a clean environment is vital for public health, environmental sustainability, and economic development, urging residents to take responsibility for their surroundings, choose approved PSP operators, comply with environmental regulations, and report waste management violations through channels established by LAWMA. The Chairman of Apapa Local Government, Hon. Idowu Adejumoke Senbanjo, commended the operation and pledged continued collaboration to promote environmental cleanliness and sustainable waste management within the area.
