en.Wedoany.com Reported - BC Hydro has surpassed 900 public electric vehicle (EV) charging ports in the province by expanding its fast-charging station at the Britton Creek Rest Area on the Coquihalla Highway, a milestone reached just in time for the summer travel season.

The newly expanded site, located near the summit of the Coquihalla Highway, features two 400-kilowatt and two 350-kilowatt chargers, capable of adding 100 kilometers of range to an average EV in just minutes. The station utilizes power-sharing technology, allowing each charger to distribute output to two vehicles simultaneously—for example, a 400-kilowatt charger can provide 200 kilowatts to each vehicle—enabling up to eight EVs to charge at once. The chargers support CCS, NACS, and CHAdeMO connectors, ensuring compatibility with most models on the market.

Adrian Dix, Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions, stated that this site is one of the highest-demand locations in the network, filling a critical gap on the Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt. He noted that with over 900 BC Hydro charging ports already in place across the province, a public charging network is being built to meet the growing demand for EVs and support economic growth.

Charlotte Mitha, President and CEO of BC Hydro, said that as more people switch to EVs, the company is focused on providing fast, reliable, and readily available charging infrastructure, especially during busy travel periods like summer. The expansion of this key station on the Coquihalla Highway gives EV drivers greater peace of mind on their journeys, knowing that reliable charging facilities are available when needed.

British Columbia currently has over 220,000 EVs on the road, with adoption rates continuing to rise. BC Hydro is prioritizing the development of hub stations equipped with multiple chargers along highway corridors and in densely populated areas to enhance reliability and reduce wait times. Over the past two years, the company has quintupled the size of its public charging network, adding more than 700 charging ports. More than 40 hub stations, each with 8 to 22 charging ports, are now operational across every region of the province, with many capable of accommodating medium-duty EVs. BC Hydro operates the largest fast-charging EV network in British Columbia and offers all connector types—CCS, NACS, and CHAdeMO.

In September 2024, BC completed the Electric Highway project, achieving a fast-charging station approximately every 150 kilometers along major routes. BC Hydro owns and operates 85% of the 155 charging stations on this highway. The network received both the ChargeHub Award and the Chartwell Best Practices Gold Award in 2026, recognizing its performance in charging services and customer experience. The province-wide public charging network now covers 189 locations with a total of 904 charging ports, developed with collaborative funding from the BC government and Natural Resources Canada.
