en.Wedoany.com Reported - Fort Erie, Canada, will welcome a new elevated water tank next month. The Niagara Region Water and Wastewater Services division is currently replacing existing storage facilities to enhance water supply services for local residents and businesses.
The new tank stands 186 feet (approximately 56.7 meters) tall and has a storage capacity of 9,250 metric tons (20.4 million pounds). Elevated water tanks store treated drinking water and use gravity to provide stable water pressure for homes, businesses, and fire protection systems. The additional storage capacity will meet the region's future development needs and ensure reliable community water supply.
Phil Lambert, Director of Water and Wastewater Services for the Niagara Region, expressed excitement about the upcoming lift, stating that the new infrastructure will better serve the community while accommodating anticipated growth. The height of the new tank is comparable to a typical 15- to 18-story building, and the lifting operation is expected to take place in early July on Pettit Road. The lift will begin in the early morning and take approximately four hours, depending on weather conditions. Since the work is being conducted on Niagara Region-owned property, no road closures or detours are anticipated. The old tank will be fully dismantled and is expected to be recycled.
Lambert added that the region's water and wastewater services planning played a key role in determining the optimal location for the new tank, ensuring the community is served in the most efficient manner. This master plan is currently being updated to continuously guide the placement of future new infrastructure, ensuring long-term reliable water and wastewater service capacity for the Niagara Region.
The need for this new tank stems from a Class Environmental Assessment initiated by the region for Fort Erie, which reviewed the existing water supply system and evaluated suitable construction sites for the new tank, as well as necessary improvements to the current system.
The updated Niagara Region Water and Wastewater Master Plan indicates that the new elevated water tank is part of the recommended improvements for the Fort Erie water distribution system. The new tank will consolidate and replace existing storage systems in Fort Erie that are nearing the end of their service life. Once operational, the new tank will improve current pumping operations for greater efficiency, reduce long-term lifecycle costs, simplify system operations by integrating multiple facilities, and provide the capacity needed to support anticipated growth for the Fort Erie water system.
The existing Central Avenue elevated water tank and the Stevensville Reservoir will be decommissioned after the new tank is commissioned and fully operational. The new tank is expected to be operational by July 2027, at which point the Central Avenue elevated water tank will be dismantled.
