en.Wedoany.com Reported - HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), a shipbuilding subsidiary of South Korea's HD Hyundai Group, held a final performance verification and type approval certificate awarding ceremony on June 29, 2026, in Jinhae, Gyeongsangnam-do, announcing the successful localization of a core component for liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered vessels—the high-pressure fuel pump. This high-pressure pump has received type approval from Bureau Veritas (BV) and has secured supply contracts for approximately 70 vessels to date.

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering is the intermediate holding company for shipbuilding and offshore engineering under HD Hyundai Group, with businesses covering ship construction, offshore engineering, engines and machinery, gas and decarbonization systems, eco-friendly propulsion solutions, and R&D. The locally developed LNG high-pressure fuel pump is a core component of the fuel supply system for LNG-powered vessels, responsible for transferring LNG from the ship's storage tank to the engine. Previously, this market was long dominated by overseas companies, and South Korea's shipbuilding industry relied on imports, facing challenges such as maintenance difficulties and supply chain instability.

To achieve this localization breakthrough, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering led the independent R&D, with South Korean small and medium-sized enterprises Pretech and Seongmun participating in the manufacturing and packaging processes. Additionally, the Liberia Registry was involved from the early development stage, conducting testing, evaluation, and review based on actual ship operating environments, thereby enhancing the product's safety and reliability.

Nam Young-joon, Head of the SD Business Division at HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, stated at the ceremony that this type approval represents a meaningful opportunity to confirm the global competitiveness of the independently developed high-pressure pump in collaboration with classification societies, flag states, and excellent domestic partners. He added that the company will successfully apply it to actual vessels based on verified stability, further improving customer service satisfaction.

To date, this high-pressure pump has secured supply contracts for approximately 70 vessels from domestic and overseas shipyards. According to data from DNV, there are currently 892 LNG-powered vessels in operation globally, with another 663 under construction. This localization of the high-pressure fuel pump will significantly enhance the supply chain stability of South Korea's core eco-friendly ship components. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering plans to successfully apply the pump to actual vessels based on verified stability and continue efforts to localize core components for eco-friendly ships.
