Rolls-Royce Expands mtu Series 2000 Variable-Speed Marine Generator Set Portfolio

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 31, Rolls-Royce Power Systems unveiled its new standardized mtu Series 2000 variable-speed marine generator set portfolio, available in 8V, 10V, 12V, and 16V configurations, with an electrical power range of 650–1850 kWe. The operating speed range of the different engine models is approximately 1200–2450 rpm, allowing the engine speed to be automatically adjusted based on the vessel's actual power demand. The products will be showcased during SMM 2026, held from September 1 to 4.

Compared with fixed-speed generator sets, the new series can vary engine speed according to different load conditions. Test and design data provided by Rolls-Royce indicate that fuel consumption and CO2 emissions during operation can be reduced by up to 15%, while operating noise is reduced by approximately 6 dB. The products also feature a compact structural design and extended overhaul intervals, aimed at reducing engine room space requirements and maintenance frequency on board vessels.

The Series 2000 variable-speed generator sets are designed for vessel types such as passenger ferries, crew transfer vessels, offshore supply vessels, yachts, and patrol boats. In addition to conventional shipboard power generation and diesel-electric propulsion, the series can be integrated into battery-powered and hybrid propulsion systems, serving as backup propulsion power in battery-powered vessels and as range extenders or power-boosting equipment in hybrid vessels.

Rolls-Royce has previously deployed variable-speed generator sets based on the mtu Series 4000 on workboats, and Series 2000 engines have also been used in yacht diesel-electric propulsion systems. This standardized product offering extends the Series 2000 variable-speed generator set portfolio to the 650–1850 kWe power range, forming a series configuration from 8V to 16V.

Rolls-Royce Power Systems will also showcase products such as marine SCR exhaust aftertreatment, automation, and analysis systems at SMM 2026. The new Series 2000 variable-speed generator sets can be combined with the company's internal combustion engine systems that support sustainable fuel operation, with specific vessel configurations determined based on power requirements and load profiles.
