en.Wedoany.com Reported - Swedish company Metacon AB (publ) has received support of up to approximately SEK 111 million from the Swedish climate investment support program Klimatklivet for the construction of a 10 MW electrolysis plant in Uppsala. The total investment for the project is approximately SEK 202 million, with the support amount accounting for 55% of the total project investment. The plant is planned to be built within the Hovgården waste management facility of Uppsala Vatten och Avfall AB and is expected to produce approximately 1,480 tons of green hydrogen annually at full capacity.
The planned hydrogen will be supplied to industrial users and hydrogen refueling stations in central Sweden. The region currently has limited hydrogen supply, mainly relying on transportation from other regions and countries. The project is based on production under real market conditions, with production interest verified through letters of intent from national and local market participants.
According to the approved application, the project is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 23,000 tons per year. The emission reductions are primarily achieved by replacing diesel in heavy transport and reducing the need for long-distance hydrogen transportation. The project also includes integration with existing facilities at Hovgården: the oxygen generated during the electrolysis process is planned to be used in Uppsala Vatten och Avfall's leachate treatment process, while the heat generated will be recovered for facility heating.
For Metacon, this plant also serves as a strategic reference project, demonstrating the company's technology, system integration, and operational capabilities under real conditions. The project aims to strengthen Metacon's core business in hydrogen system design, integration, and delivery by establishing a full-scale reference environment for the company's electrolysis modules.
Metacon's net investment after receiving support has been partially financed through the acquisition of Hynion's bankruptcy estate, announced on October 14, 2025. The project structure allows for lower initial capital requirements, with remaining financing needs arising later in the project. Construction is planned to begin in the second half of 2026, with production expected to start in the first quarter of 2029.
Christer Wikner, President and CEO of Metacon, stated that the project will demonstrate that green hydrogen can be produced efficiently on a larger scale locally, bringing climate benefits, enhanced resilience, and greater self-sufficiency to the region, while being clearly aligned with market demand.
