Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 19, At Smart Energy 2025 in Sydney, Essential Energy, the CSIRO, Sigenergy Australia, and Australian EV company AUSEV jointly announced the successful testing and market readiness of Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology in Australia. This milestone highlights the potential for electric vehicles (EVs) to support the nation’s energy transition.
Essential Energy confirmed the successful integration of AUSEV’s Ford F-150 Lightning EV with a combined charging system (CCS2) DC bi-directional charger and the Clean Energy Council-approved Sigenergy SigenStor energy storage system. The SigenStor system, which includes an integrated V2G charger, can be seamlessly connected to Essential Energy’s network using the existing solar connection process, making it accessible for customers.
In collaboration with the CSIRO, Essential Energy is exploring V2G technology with other vehicle manufacturers to expand options for consumers. These efforts aim to enhance the compatibility and adoption of V2G systems across Australia’s energy networks.
Luke Jenner, Essential Energy’s COO, emphasized the significance of the Ford F-150 Lightning test results, stating: “V2G unlocks the potential for customers to get more value out of their renewable energy investments and is a critical step in facilitating the uptake of electric vehicles.” He added: “We have been trialing V2G on our network since 2023 with a customer using his Nissan Leaf and the Wallbox Quasar charger.”
Jenner noted that in 2024, the CSIRO conducted a trial at Essential Energy’s Port Macquarie Innovation Hub, which verified the effectiveness of the Sigenergy SigenStor CCS2 DC bi-directional charger paired with the AUSEV Ford F-150 Lightning on Essential Energy’s network. These tests demonstrate the reliability and readiness of V2G technology for broader implementation.
The collaboration underscores Australia’s commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions. V2G technology enables EVs to not only draw power but also return energy to the grid, enhancing energy efficiency and supporting grid stability. By integrating EVs with renewable energy systems, this innovation helps customers maximize their investments while promoting the wider adoption of electric vehicles.
The successful trials and market readiness of V2G technology mark a significant step toward a sustainable energy future in Australia. The partnership between Essential Energy, CSIRO, Sigenergy Australia, and AUSEV showcases how collaborative innovation can drive progress in clean energy, benefiting both consumers and the national energy landscape.
