en.Wedoany.com Reported - Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has made a final investment decision through its Advanced Bioenergy Fund I (ABF I) for the Cobirgy biogas plant in La Sentiu de Sió, Lleida province, Catalonia, Spain. The plant will become one of the largest biogas facilities in Spain, expected to produce over 230 GWh of biomethane annually, along with approximately 150,000 tonnes of organic fertilizers and soil improvement products per year.
The biogas plant can process up to 500,000 tonnes of agricultural and industrial organic waste annually. The project has received capital expenditure grant support from the Government of Catalonia and has been designated as a strategic business project. More than 350 local farmers have formally joined the project, ensuring that over 80% of the feedstock comes from farms within a 15-kilometer radius.
Thomas Dalsgaard, Partner at CIP and Head of the ABF fund, stated: "We are delighted to enter the Spanish bioenergy market through Cobirgy, which is ABF's first investment in Spain. This will make a significant contribution to Spain's energy security and decarbonization, creating local jobs and driving investment in agriculture and surrounding rural communities."
The biogas plant is the fifth investment of the ABF I fund and its third outside Denmark. The fund is on track to deploy its committed capital of €727 million. Construction is expected to begin in the second half of 2026, with commercial operations planned to commence by the end of 2028.
