en.Wedoany.com Reported - Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has taken a Final Investment Decision (FID) on the Cobirgy project, a large-scale biogas facility that will be among the largest of its kind in Spain once completed.

Located in La Sentiu de Sió, in the province of Lérida, Catalonia, the project will be developed through CIP's Advanced Bioenergy Fund I (ABF I), marking its fifth investment and third outside Denmark. ABF I is steadily advancing the deployment of its €727 million in committed capital through this initiative.

The Cobirgy project is expected to supply over 230 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of biomethane annually, making it the highest-capacity biogas plant in Spain to date. In addition to energy production, the facility will utilize agricultural and organic waste as feedstock to produce approximately 150,000 tonnes of soil improvers and organic fertilizers per year. The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through advanced processing technologies and mitigate local nitrate pollution.

The Government of Catalonia has designated Cobirgy as a strategic business project and provided capital expenditure (CAPEX) grant support, underscoring its significance at both regional and national levels.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026, with operations expected to commence by the end of 2028. Once fully operational, the facility will be capable of processing up to 500,000 tonnes of feedstock annually. Over 350 local farmers have already signed up, with more than 80% of the slurry expected to come from farms within a 15-kilometer radius, closely integrating the project with the local agricultural ecosystem.

Thomas Dalsgaard, Partner at CIP and Partner-in-Charge of ABF, stated that entering the Spanish bioenergy market through Cobirgy, ABF's first investment in Spain, represents a significant step for the fund. It will contribute substantially to Spain's energy security and decarbonization, create local jobs, and drive investment in the agricultural sector and surrounding rural communities. He expressed anticipation for advancing the project and working closely with local farmers, development partners, and government authorities as it moves into the construction phase.
