en.Wedoany.com Reported - Vietnam Airlines set the second-longest flight record for an Airbus A350 in a recent special mission. One of the airline's Airbus A350-900 aircraft flew non-stop from Simón Bolívar International Airport (CCS) in Caracas, Venezuela, to Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) in Hanoi, covering approximately 10,190 miles (16,398 kilometers).

This flight record stemmed from a special government mission, not a regular passenger service. Although this flight exceeded Singapore Airlines' non-stop flight from Singapore to New York (currently the world's longest regular commercial route), it still fell short of the total distance record for this aircraft type held by a German Air Force A350 mission. It is expected that after Qantas launches "Project Sunrise" using the Airbus A350-1000, direct flights from Sydney to London and New York will become the longest regular operational routes for this aircraft type, and the rankings will change.
Humanitarian flight achieves record-breaking journey. The operation began with flight VN66, which departed from Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) in Hanoi, carrying 124 rescue personnel, 10 search and rescue dogs, and approximately 27.6 tons (25 metric tons) of emergency supplies and specialized equipment to Venezuela, which had been hit by a devastating earthquake. The aircraft made a scheduled technical stop at Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) in Paris before proceeding to Simón Bolívar International Airport (CCS) in Caracas.

Less than 24 hours later, Vietnam Airlines operated flight VN68, the second humanitarian mission along the same route. This flight carried an additional 51.6 tons (46.8 metric tons) of relief supplies and equipment. According to the airline, the consecutive missions required close coordination between government agencies and Vietnam Airlines' flight operations, engineering, and ground service teams to mobilize personnel and cargo across two continents in a short time. After completing the rescue mission, the aircraft flew from Caracas to Hanoi as a ferry flight, covering 10,190 miles (16,398 kilometers) in over 18 hours.
This ultra-long distance was driven by the special needs of the humanitarian mission, not commercial scheduling. Vietnam Airlines typically does not operate flights to South America, so the deployment to Venezuela was an extremely rare mission, far beyond the airline's regular route network.

Airbus lists the typical maximum range of the A350-900 at approximately 8,900 miles (14,350 kilometers), but the actual flight distance depends on various operational factors, including payload, weather conditions, wind direction, routing, and fuel planning. Special missions under favorable conditions may exceed the aircraft's published standard range. This operation demonstrated the flexibility of the A350 beyond traditional passenger services. Modern long-range widebody aircraft are often used for evacuation flights, diplomatic transport, and disaster relief missions, capable of transporting large numbers of personnel and critical cargo across intercontinental distances.
Currently, Vietnam Airlines' return flight from Caracas ranks second, behind an A350 mission operated by the German Air Force during a special deployment in 2020, which holds the current distance record for this aircraft type. This humanitarian flight is longer than Singapore Airlines' Singapore-New York route using the Airbus A350-900ULR. Although these flights remain the world's longest regular commercial passenger routes, in terms of total distance, they are all shorter than the A350 flights of these two special missions.
The record book may not remain unchanged for long. Qantas is preparing to launch "Project Sunrise" using specially configured A350-1000 aircraft, capable of flying directly from Sydney to London and New York. The airline completed "Project Sunrise" validation flights several years ago, but at that time used Boeing 787-9 aircraft. Once commercial operations begin, "Project Sunrise" is expected to set the longest flight record for the Airbus A350. Until then, Vietnam Airlines' humanitarian mission stands as one of the most remarkable achievements for this aircraft type. This operation highlights how modern long-range passenger aircraft can support disaster relief efforts while showcasing the extraordinary capabilities of the Airbus A350.
