en.Wedoany.com Reported - Antofagasta Terminal Internacional (ATI) in Chile has successfully transshipped over 1,500 Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) units to support energy transition projects.
According to ATI General Manager Mark Bindhoff, each battery weighs between 39 and 46 tons, presenting high technical complexity. He stated that the terminal has the capability for specialized handling and temporary storage of large-tonnage cargo.
Bindhoff noted that this operation helps ensure continuity in clients' overland logistics chains, strengthens the national energy matrix, and promotes renewable energy development, solidifying ATI's position as a key player and strategic partner in the energy development of the Antofagasta region.
The BESS systems are strategically significant for Chile's National Electric System (SEN), as their energy storage function helps enhance the flexibility of power system operations. The Antofagasta region concentrates over 50% of Chile's BESS projects, with the local desert providing favorable conditions for renewable energy development.
In 2025, the terminal transshipped 750 BESS batteries; as of 2026, ATI has unloaded over 800 units for energy industry clients. ATI Commercial Director Víctor Tobar stated that such operations reflect the terminal's ability to meet the logistics demands of the energy sector, playing a strategic role for the energy industry and multiple production sectors.
ATI has not only increased BESS transshipment volumes but also achieved a 5% growth in copper transshipment and a 13% growth in breakbulk cargo compared to 2024, with total transshipment volume reaching nearly 2.8 million tons in 2025, consolidating its position in managing high-volume and high-complexity cargo in northern Chile.
