en.Wedoany.com Reported - Transport for NSW has completed a speed limit review for sections of Bells Line of Road under the federal government's $100 million Road Safety Program, with safety upgrades and speed limit adjustments now in place. The review covered three key sections: Bell to Mount Wilson, Claustral Causeway to Berambing, and Berambing to North Richmond.

Safety upgrades completed

The assessment considered crash history, road conditions, traffic volume, road usage, property access, and the surrounding environment to determine the need for speed limit changes. Key adjustments include: reducing the 24-hour speed limit from 100 km/h to 80 km/h on a 6.4-kilometer section between Bell and Mount Wilson Road; introducing a new 50 km/h speed limit in the Bilpin shopping area to improve pedestrian safety; and extending and adjusting several 60 km/h speed limit zones in Bell and Bilpin to better align with the road environment. Transport for NSW stated that these changes are expected to increase travel time by approximately two minutes while delivering greater safety and a more consistent speed limit experience.

Other completed safety improvements include: upgraded directional and warning signs, implementation of safer overtaking lane merges, new no-U-turn signs at the Bell heavy vehicle safety station, and new entry treatment facilities in Bell, Bilpin, and Kurrajong Heights to encourage drivers to slow down when entering town areas. Transport for NSW also noted that it is continuing to advance investigations into further safety upgrades, including curve straightening, safety barriers, intersection improvements, and additional signage, to inform future investment priorities along the corridor.

Damien Pfeiffer, Executive Director of Transport for NSW, noted that these changes make speed limits more consistent with current road conditions, providing drivers with a more uniform speed limit and smoother journey, while encouraging slower driving through additional safety features.
