en.Wedoany.com Reported - Amazon has announced a new power purchase agreement (PPA) to procure battery storage output from European Energy's Winton North solar-plus-storage project in northeastern Victoria, Australia, having previously secured a PPA for the solar photovoltaic portion of the project. This makes Winton North one of the few projects in Australia where a single corporate offtaker procures both generation and storage output through separate bilateral agreements.

European Energy has reached financial close on the Winton North project. The Danish developer revealed last week (July 2) that debt financing was provided by Commerzbank AG's Singapore branch and Societe Generale. This financial support enables the construction of a 130 MW solar farm and a 100 MW/220 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) on a 256-hectare site. Construction has commenced and is expected to be completed in 2026, with the project anticipated to generate 227 GWh of clean energy annually once operational.
Matt O'Rourke, Director of Infrastructure Policy for Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Australia and New Zealand, confirmed the expanded partnership and stated that co-locating battery storage with solar photovoltaic generation means clean energy can be stored and dispatched when the grid needs it most, helping to enhance reliability during Australia's transition to renewable energy. Catriona McLeod, Country Manager for European Energy in Australia, noted that the project demonstrates growing market demand for flexible, contracted renewable energy assets.
During the project's early development phase, Spanish power electronics company Ingeteam signed a supply contract in October 2025 to provide photovoltaic inverters, storage inverters, and a hybrid plant control system, including plug-and-play medium-voltage stations integrating inverters, low-to-medium voltage transformers, medium-voltage switchgear, and auxiliary service panels, along with its Multi Plant Controller system. All Energy Contracting secured the end-to-end electrical and trenching works package in late 2025. The project will connect to AusNet's existing transmission network at the Glenrowan substation via approximately 5 km of transmission lines.
The project is part of Amazon's AUD 20 billion commitment to expand Australian data center infrastructure using utility-scale solar power. European Energy operates in 20 countries with a global portfolio encompassing solar, onshore wind, offshore wind, power-to-X, and battery storage. Its Australian operations include the Winton North project and other solar and storage developments in Victoria and New South Wales.
