China's Jiangmen Nanyang Shipyard Secures Orders for 11 Bulk Carriers Worth Nearly 2.4 Billion Yuan

en.Wedoany.com Reported - China's Jiangmen Nanyang Shipyard has secured orders for 11 bulk carriers, with a total contract value of nearly 2.4 billion yuan. Its cumulative order backlog has reached nearly 150 vessels, ranking first globally in both order backlog and delivery volume in the small to medium-sized bulk carrier market.

According to sources, Jiangmen Nanyang Shipyard recently signed construction contracts for six 64,500 DWT Ultramax bulk carriers and five 40,500 DWT open-hatch handy-size bulk carriers, with all new vessels scheduled for delivery by 2030. The identities of the shipowners and contract prices have not yet been disclosed. According to Clarksons data, Jiangmen Nanyang Shipyard signed the above contracts with anonymous clients on June 26.

Currently, the market price for a 64,500 DWT Ultramax bulk carrier built by Chinese shipyards is approximately $34 million per vessel, while a 40,500 DWT handy-size bulk carrier is around $30 million per vessel. Based on this estimate, the total value of the 11 new vessels is approximately $350 million (about 2.376 billion yuan). Clarksons data shows that the current newbuilding price for 61,000-64,500 DWT bulk carriers is about $35.25 million, slightly up from $33.5 million in the same period last year; the newbuilding price for 38,000-42,000 DWT handy-size bulk carriers is about $31 million, also higher than the $29.5 million recorded last year.

With the confirmation of the latest orders, Jiangmen Nanyang Shipyard's order backlog has increased to 146 vessels, including 71 of 64,500 DWT, 73 of 40,500 DWT, and two of 40,000 DWT bulk carriers, with delivery schedules extending to 2030. In the small to medium-sized bulk carrier segment of 69,999 DWT and below, Jiangmen Nanyang Shipyard holds the world's largest order backlog. The identities of most shipowners remain undisclosed, with known clients including Jinhui Shipping, Japan's Nisshin Shipping, and Suisse-Atlantique.

In addition to external orders, Jiangmen Nanyang Shipyard is also developing its own fleet. Its shipping company, JNS Shipping, currently operates 13 open-hatch handy-size bulk carriers, all built by Jiangmen Nanyang Shipyard and delivered between 2024 and this year. Furthermore, JNS Shipping has six 64,500 DWT Ultramax bulk carriers under construction, scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2028.

Founded in early 2005, Jiangmen Nanyang Shipyard is the largest private shipbuilding enterprise in Guangdong Province, located on the shores of Yinzhou Lake in Xinhui District, Jiangmen City. The company has two factory sites covering 915 mu (approximately 61 hectares), with a total workshop area of 140,000 square meters. It can build vessels up to 100,000 DWT, with an annual shipbuilding capacity of 1.6 million DWT. The company has long focused on the bulk carrier market for vessels under 100,000 DWT, with the 40,500 DWT handy-size bulk carrier having become one of the international standard ship types, known in the global market as the "Nanyang-type" vessel. Since its inception, Jiangmen Nanyang Shipyard has delivered over 100 handy-size bulk carriers, holding the world's largest market share in the modern energy-efficient handy-size bulk carrier segment. In 2024, the company entered the Ultramax vessel market for the first time, achieving an upgrade in its product portfolio.
