en.Wedoany.com Reported - American Express has commenced construction on its new global headquarters at 2 World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing redevelopment of the World Trade Center complex.
The groundbreaking ceremony was celebrated with a foundation-laying event, attended by company executives, government officials, and representatives from partner organizations. The planned American Express tower, standing nearly 1,250 feet tall and spanning approximately 2 million square feet, will be the final commercial building on the World Trade Center site, expected to add a new landmark to the Manhattan skyline and drive business activity.
The event attracted several political leaders, including New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani, Silverstein Properties CEO Lisa Silverstein, Kevin O'Toole and Kathryn Garcia of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York President Gary LaBarbera, as well as community members and project partners.
Denise Pickett, President of American Express Global Services, stated that the project is far more than a new headquarters; it reaffirms the company's belief in the city, its commitment to colleagues, and its enduring connection with the community. Pickett noted that the new tower will become a place to spark creativity, forge partnerships, and foster innovation, bringing together talent from all over, designed to inspire creativity and strengthen collaboration.
New York State Governor Kathy Hochul pointed out that from the union workers involved in construction to the thousands of employees who will work there in the future, 2 World Trade Center will become a symbol defining resilience, excellence, and opportunity in Lower Manhattan. Mayor Mamdani stated that this project is a vote of confidence in the city's future, encompassing thousands of quality jobs, the local economy, sustainability, and the final piece of the World Trade Center redevelopment puzzle.
The new headquarters is expected to create over 3,200 direct and indirect construction jobs in New York City, with an estimated economic impact of approximately $5.9 billion for the city and $6.3 billion for New York State. American Express expects to move employees into the completed building by 2031. The company confirmed plans to build its new global headquarters at 2 World Trade Center in February.
