en.Wedoany.com Reported - Toyota's GR performance brand plans to expand its product line and adopt a "performance hybrid" system as the core powertrain technology driving the future. The prototype of this strategy is already reflected in the GR GT model, which combines a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with a hybrid powertrain, delivering a total system output of over 478 kW, torque of 850 Nm, and a top speed exceeding 300 km/h.

The GR GT is expected to launch in 2027 and will serve as a technical blueprint for other Toyota GR models, with hybrid technology applied to next-generation products. Ray Munday, Senior Manager of Product Planning and Pricing at Toyota Australia, stated that efficiency-focused hybrids aim to match existing performance while improving fuel economy, whereas performance-focused hybrids leverage electrification to achieve greater power from existing internal combustion engine powertrains while maintaining fuel efficiency. He noted that the GR GT is an example of a performance hybrid, and the company's future direction is "large-displacement, powerful internal combustion engines plus electrification."

The plan for the GR brand to adopt performance hybrids in the future aligns with reports from Japan. According to Best Car, the brand plans to introduce new hybrid engines in its Yaris GR and Corolla GR hatchbacks, with related plans already underway since 2024. At that year's multi-pathway seminar, Toyota showcased a gasoline-electric engine that will redefine the brand's performance models. This 2.0-liter turbocharged hybrid system is reportedly set to produce 294 kW of power and 500 Nm of torque, an improvement over the current GR Yaris's 221 kW and 400 Nm.

John Pappas, Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Franchise Operations at Toyota Australia, stated that "the GR business is extremely exciting," and looking ahead, GR will play a more significant role within the Toyota Motor Corporation family. He mentioned that the brand's form and feel, as well as its impact on future products, have yet to be determined, but "the company's plans for GR are truly exciting." Although Pappas did not disclose specific details, he confirmed that as this performance sub-brand gains renewed emphasis, its product line in Australia will extend beyond the GR Yaris and GR Corolla. "Globally, we have articulated GR's role in performance and truly learning from motorsports and performance testing," Pappas said. "We are very excited about the performance here. We are studying what this means for the Australian market."
