en.Wedoany.com Reported - Zaragoza will build a facility capable of converting 150,000 tons of non-recyclable waste into green hydrogen and other renewable gases annually.

The "Zaragoza Zero Waste" (Zaragoza Zero Residuos) project, with an investment of nearly €200 million, aims to completely eliminate landfill use and provide a circular economy alternative. The Zaragoza government is about to launch the bidding process.

The new facility will complement the existing Zaragoza Urban Waste Treatment Complex (Complejo para el Tratamiento de Residuos Urbanos de Zaragoza, CTRUZ). CTRUZ already recycles over 50% of the city's waste, but complex mixed materials are still landfilled. The new facility will process the current 150,000 tons of non-recyclable waste.

The plant uses advanced chemical or molecular recycling processes to convert carbon from waste into clean syngas, which is further used to produce methanol, green hydrogen, and other renewable fuels.

Once operational, the project is expected to save approximately €4.5 million annually in landfill costs. The winning entity will recover the investment through the commercialization of industrial products such as methanol.

The tender requires the technology to use the latest generation thermochemical processes, with proven operational experience under high carbon conversion efficiency and real-world conditions. The facility must also adhere to the "net-zero emissions" principle, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 70% compared to the current situation.
