en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Eurobodalla Shire Council in Australia announced on July 14, 2026, that the new embankment at Surfside in the Eurobodalla region of New South Wales has been officially completed. This project is a key component of the council's broader coastal protection plan, aimed at safeguarding low-lying areas from coastal flooding. Concurrently, the council has commenced preliminary work on the Casey Beach seawall to protect Beach Road from increasingly severe wave erosion threats.

The Surfside embankment project spans 190 meters in length and 10 meters in width, featuring a raised embankment constructed using 2,700 tonnes of rock. The top is covered with sand and soil, blending seamlessly with the surrounding protected area. Project manager Paul Pomfret stated that favorable weather and tidal conditions allowed the project to proceed as planned and stay within budget. Pomfret also noted that a satisfying design addition was made during the final stages—a pedestrian pathway was built within the protected area, with turf laid on the inland side and native plants planted on the embankment crest. As vegetation grows, the embankment will integrate more naturally into the coastal landscape.

With the completion of the Surfside embankment, the council's next phase will focus on constructing the Casey Beach seawall. In recent years, the existing seawall at Casey Beach has faced increasing pressure, with frequent easterly cyclones pushing seawater over and across Beach Road. Pomfret pointed out that the current seawall can no longer meet protection needs, and without action, sections of Beach Road face a real risk of being washed away. The new seawall will use 21,000 tonnes of newly quarried and recycled rock, with a design life of 30 years and provisions for future heightening as needed.

Located on the southern coast of New South Wales, the Eurobodalla Shire is renowned for its long coastline and rich tourism resources, but it also faces challenges from climate change-induced sea level rise and increasing extreme weather events. This coastal protection project is a key initiative by the council to address these challenges and ensure the safety of coastal communities and critical infrastructure. With the completion of the Surfside embankment and the advancement of the Casey Beach seawall construction, local coastal defense capabilities will be significantly enhanced.
