en.Wedoany.com Reported - Rwandan Prime Minister Justin Ngiziyumva recently visited the construction site of the Muvumba Dam project, accompanied by officials from the Rwanda Water Resources Authority, the Ministry of Infrastructure, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Environment, and the Energy Group, as well as Chinese and local project participants and on-site management teams.

The Muvumba multi-purpose dam, with a total storage capacity of approximately 55 million cubic meters, is a comprehensive water conservancy hub integrating flood control and disaster reduction, farmland irrigation, domestic water supply, and clean energy power generation. Upon completion, the project will irrigate 10,000 hectares of farmland, supply 50,000 cubic meters of treated domestic water daily, and generate 1 MW of hydropower, effectively mitigating regional flood risks and ensuring agricultural production and domestic water security. Construction officially began in 2023, but earthwork and foundation work have been repeatedly hindered by continuous heavy rainfall during the rainy seasons. The project team has seized the dry season construction window, increased the deployment of workers, earthwork transport vehicles, and large-scale construction equipment, and implemented round-the-clock staggered construction schedules to accelerate the remaining works.

During the site inspection, Ngiziyumva received briefings on project progress, construction challenges, progress of supporting works, and land acquisition and resettlement. He called for further refinement of the construction plan, urging the project to be advanced at full speed while strictly adhering to safety and quality standards to ensure timely operation. He also emphasized that local Rwandan technical and operational teams should leverage this project opportunity to deeply engage with the construction team, systematically learn core technologies such as dam construction techniques, equipment operation and maintenance, and project management, and accumulate practical experience to gradually achieve independent construction and operation of similar water conservancy projects.

The project team will coordinate efforts in project progress, construction quality, safety production, and local talent development, deepen Sino-Rwandan technical cooperation, and strive to realize the comprehensive benefits of the project at an early date, contributing to improved livelihoods and high-quality economic and social development in eastern Rwanda.
