According to data released by the Korea Construction Industry Research Institute on the 14th, the June CBSI rose 3.0 points month-on-month to 74.5. The index is based on 100, with a reading below 100 indicating that more companies are pessimistic about the construction business outlook than optimistic.

By sub-index, the new orders index (73.1) rose 4.8 points month-on-month, the construction completion index (80.9) rose 1.9 points, and the backlog index (76.3) rose 3.2 points. The construction payment collection index (77.0) rose 0.1 points, the financing index (74.5) rose 5.5 points, and the material supply index (66.3) rose 2.9 points. The Korea Construction Industry Research Institute analyzed that although most sub-indices improved month-on-month, the overall level remained in the mid-70s, indicating persistently sluggish sentiment, with the material supply index falling 24.4 points year-on-year.
By project type, the civil engineering index (79.7) rose 3.6 points, the housing index (75.7) rose 7.6 points, and the non-residential building index (67.3) rose 4.3 points. By company size, the large enterprise index (91.7) rose 5.0 points, the mid-sized enterprise index (72.4) rose 5.7 points, but the small and medium-sized enterprise index (59.4) fell 1.9 points. By region, Seoul (89.2) rose 5.4 points, and other regions (68.2) rose 5.5 points.

Total construction orders in May this year amounted to 22.4 trillion won, up 50.0% year-on-year. Among them, public orders (5 trillion won) increased by 60.9% driven by civil engineering and non-residential projects; private orders (17.4 trillion won) increased by 47.1% due to large non-residential projects related to semiconductor factories and industrial complexes. The construction completion value, a coincident indicator of the construction business cycle, stood at 11.9 trillion won, up 3.6% year-on-year, but the recovery momentum was weak. Non-residential building construction increased by 18.2%, residential building construction decreased by 3.9%, and civil engineering increased by only 1.4%.
Construction employment in May was 1.92 million people, down 1.0% month-on-month and 2.2% year-on-year. The construction cost index, a measure of building material prices, stood at 137.67, up 5.1% year-on-year. The producer price index for ordinary rebar rose 6.1% year-on-year, and the market price index rose 12.1%, becoming a major factor in the increased burden of material costs.
