Netherlands-based e-Smart Avia unveiled the ClearSky Airlines brand at the Farnborough International Airshow, confirming it will use five BETA Technologies ALIA CX300 electric aircraft to launch a regional cargo network based at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. The company has partnered with aviation leasing specialist SLI to finance the initial fleet. CEO Denis Ilin stated that this milestone has transformed the project's outlook. Ilin noted that the biggest challenge was securing aircraft financing, which has been successfully resolved through the partnership with SLI, leaving the company financially comfortable to advance the airline's launch plans.
ClearSky plans to operate the conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) version of the ALIA CX300 on routes up to 500 kilometers with a maximum payload of 500 kilograms, serving customers in life sciences, healthcare, aerospace, automotive, and other time-critical industries. The company also aims to develop electric feeder services connecting regional airports with major cargo hubs. Commercial operations still require regulatory approval, but the airline expects to secure its first customer contracts by the end of this year. Ilin indicated that some definitive agreements are expected to be signed later this year.
The company is also in discussions with several established airlines regarding potential feeder partnerships, though Ilin declined to name them. He mentioned that talks are ongoing with several European and other international airlines, leaving them to comment and confirm directly. Despite tight commercial slot availability at Schiphol, ClearSky plans to base its aircraft at Schiphol East. Ilin stated that Schiphol East is being considered as a potential base, which has dedicated aprons and an adjacent short runway currently used primarily for business jets.
The airline is also closely monitoring whether European regulators will consider preferential treatment for electric aircraft, reflecting their significantly reduced noise levels and zero direct emissions. Ilin said this is exactly what is being discussed, and they look forward to positive news in this regard. ClearSky's launch marks the latest phase of a project announced under the e-Smart Avia brand, which has been securing aircraft supply, financing, and regulatory approvals over the past two years. The airline plans to begin operations in the third quarter of 2027 with an initial fleet of five aircraft, followed by expansion across continental Europe and eventually into markets such as the UK, the Middle East, and Northeast Asia.
