UK's 3MW Culzean Floating Wind Turbine Completes Integration, Set for Tow-Out to Offshore Site

en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Culzean floating wind turbine, which will power the Culzean gas platform in the North Sea off the coast of Scotland, has completed integration with its floating foundation and is set to be towed to the offshore site.

Archer, the project's engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor, completed the installation of the Vestas wind turbine tower, nacelle, and blades on the floating foundation earlier this month. The floating foundation was designed and developed by Ocergy. Archer stated that it has completed all integration work together with partners including Global Maritime, Navitas Renewables, Wergeland Group, Sarens, and Archer Vertikal.

This floating wind pilot project is one of 13 Innovation and Targeted Oil & Gas (INTOG) offshore wind projects awarded seabed rights by Crown Estate Scotland in 2023, with operator TotalEnergies securing the rights for the Culzean gas field. TotalEnergies launched the project in August 2024, with manufacturing commencing in November of the same year.

The Culzean floating wind project is currently led by NEO NEXT+ Energy. The company is an independent UK oil and gas producer, formed on March 30, 2026, through the merger of NEO Energy, Repsol UK, and TotalEnergies' UK upstream business.

The project comprises a single 3MW floating wind turbine, which will be installed approximately 2 kilometers west of the Culzean gas platform, about 220 kilometers off Scotland's east coast. Once operational, the turbine is expected to meet approximately 20% of the platform's electricity demand, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by replacing a portion of the power generated by gas turbines.

In addition to supplying renewable electricity to the gas platform, the Culzean floating wind pilot project is also intended to serve as a demonstration platform for floating wind technology, accumulating operational data and experience to support future commercial projects. According to Ocergy, its semi-submersible foundation is designed for modular manufacturing and optimized for rapid assembly, and this project marks the first commercial deployment of the OCG-Wind floating foundation technology.
