The German sportswear brand has been driving the commercialization of 3D-printed footwear over the past decade, from the adidas 3D Runner—its first sneaker with a 3D-printed midsole in 2016—to subsequent Futurecraft 4D and 4DFWD models, the Climacool launched in 2024 as its first fully 3D-printed footwear product, and high-performance basketball and soccer shoes over the past year. The newly released Futurecool builds on the Climacool's silhouette DNA while introducing a bolder new profile.

Consistent with the Climacool, the new shoe is formed through one-piece 3D printing, with the integrated lattice structure in the upper specifically optimized for breathability, support, and comfort. adidas has not yet disclosed the specific technology and materials used for this new 3D-printed shoe, but its previous Futurecraft 4D midsoles and Climacool sneakers were manufactured using Carbon's Digital Light Synthesis technology, with UV-curable resin and polyurethane as materials. This process enables a seamless construction, eliminating the assembly steps and adhesives of traditional sneakers. The lattice structure of the upper is engineered to deliver 360-degree breathability and adaptive fit comfort, with variable-density zones providing structural support and flexibility where needed.

Compared to the silhouette of traditional Climacool sneakers, the Futurecool adopts a bolder, more futuristic style, presenting "distinctive sculptural proportions." The iconic three-stripe elements of adidas are retained on the lateral side and tongue, with a contrasting stripe running across the top of the shoe. This release is available only in a black-and-white colorway.

Alexander Taylor of adidas SV Innovation Design stated: "The Futurecool redefines what's possible in sneakers, combining advanced printing technology, engineering, and a design that looks and feels unlike anything before. It's designed for those who want to embrace the future before it becomes mainstream."

adidas has been prominent in bringing 3D-printed footwear to the mainstream market, with relatively wide releases of its 3D-printed wearables priced comparably to traditional premium sneakers. The new Futurecool will roll out in phases, with 400 individually numbered 3D-printed pairs released as of today, available via a draw on the CONFIRMED app. The global official launch is scheduled for April 1, 2027, with the unisex Futurecool retailing at €180 (approximately $210) and available in UK sizes 4–14.
