Wedoany.com Report-Jun 25, Spain’s Secretary of State for Energy has confirmed €524 million ($600 million) in grants for five hydrogen projects under the IPCEI Hy2Use program, part of a €794 million ($910 million) allocation announced in July 2024 and approved by the EU in September 2022. These initiatives aim to advance renewable hydrogen production and use in industrial applications across Spain, supported by Spain’s Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan and the EU’s NextGenerationEU initiative.
The projects are expected to mobilize over €1 billion initially, with potential investments exceeding €6 billion over their lifetime. They focus on building high-capacity electrolysers and a hydrogen generation project to support local industries and decarbonization efforts.
The Asturias H2 Valley project, led by EDP Group’s H2 Aboño, receives €78 million to develop a 150MW electrolysis plant at the Aboño thermal power plant in northern Spain. This facility will supply renewable hydrogen to local industries and a refueling station in Aboño.
The Green H2 Los Barrios project, managed by EDP’s H2 Los Barrios, also receives €78 million for a 130MW electrolyser at the Los Barrios thermal power plant in Palmones, southern Spain. It will provide hydrogen to local steelworks and a chemical plant in the Bay of Gibraltar.
The Cartagena large-scale electrolyser project, operated by Repsol’s Cartagena Hydrogen Network, is allocated €155 million to build a 100MW alkaline electrolysis plant at Repsol’s Cartagena refinery. The project will supply hydrogen for the refinery, mobility, and gas and electricity sectors.
The Bilbao large-scale electrolyser project, led by Petronor’s Bay of Biscay Hydrogen, receives €160 million to establish a 100MW electrolyser in the Port of Bilbao. This initiative will support the Petronor refinery and other industrial consumers within the Basque Hydrogen Corridor.
The Ver-amonia project, developed by Iam Caecius and EDP in Teruel, eastern Spain, is granted €53 million to construct a 25MW electrolysis plant producing 15,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually for fertilizer use.
A spokesperson for the Secretary of State for Energy stated: “The grants are being provided through Spain’s Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, which is supported by the European Union through its NextGenerationEU initiative.” These projects underscore Spain’s commitment to fostering sustainable energy solutions and strengthening industrial applications of renewable hydrogen.
