Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 20, STRABAG’s subsidiary, Ed. ZÜBLIN AG, has undertaken the redevelopment of the Arne Jacobsen Haus, a listed building in Hamburg’s City Nord district, Germany, previously the headquarters of Hamburg’s electricity board. As the general contractor for AJH, ZÜBLIN is transforming the 1969 high-rise, designed by architects Arne Jacobsen and Otto Weitling, into a modern “New Work” complex while preserving its iconic architectural features.

ZÜBLIN is overseeing the redevelopment on behalf of AJH.

The project, currently underway, focuses on creating a functional and sustainable workspace. ZÜBLIN completed the planning phase and is now overseeing construction, which includes replacing the 13-storey building’s facade with an energy-efficient envelope that meets strict conservation requirements. The redevelopment spans approximately 50,000 square meters, with select areas preserved or reconstructed to maintain the building’s distinctive interior and historical value.

“With the Arne Jacobsen Haus, we’re not only revitalising an iconic architectural landmark – we’re creating space for the working world of tomorrow,” said Jörg Rösler, a member of STRABAG’s management board. “We take great pride in applying our expertise in refurbishing existing buildings to make a meaningful contribution to society: conserving resources, reducing CO₂ emissions, and enhancing efficiency.”

MATRIX Real Estate, the project’s developer, emphasizes balancing preservation with modernization. “Preserving brilliance, creating the future – this has been our guiding principle since 2019 as we’ve transformed the Arne Jacobsen Haus into a modern office building that meets the demands of New Work and sustainability,” said Martin E. Schaer, managing director of MATRIX Real Estate. “Our goal is to preserve the architectural and functional quality of this design classic while creating a contemporary working environment. We are delighted to have found an expert partner in Ed. ZÜBLIN AG to help realise this complex undertaking.”

The redevelopment aligns with STRABAG’s Strategy 2030, which prioritizes resource-efficient and sustainable construction practices, supporting the European Green Deal’s goal of climate-neutral buildings by 2050. By integrating energy-efficient solutions and adhering to conservation guidelines, the project ensures the Arne Jacobsen Haus remains a functional, environmentally responsible landmark.

This initiative enhances Hamburg’s City Nord district by providing a modern workspace that supports sustainability and innovation. The collaboration between ZÜBLIN and MATRIX Real Estate demonstrates a commitment to preserving architectural heritage while meeting contemporary demands for efficient, eco-friendly office environments.
